Premiere: “Text Me Merry Christmas” With Kristen Bell And Straight No Chaser

See the animated video for the modern holiday song we’ve been waiting for.

This vintage-feeling holiday video is a combined effort from Atlantic Records, Kristen Bell, Straight No Chaser, JASH, and songwriters Adam Schlesinger and David Javerbaum. The modern Christmas tune was later animated by Cuppa Coffee Studios. It’s another sign-o-the-times, don’t you think?

Rolling Stones’ Brown Sugar saxophonist Bobby Keys dead at 70

Rolling Stones’ Brown Sugar saxophonist Bobby Keys dead at 70

BOBBY Keys, a saxophonist and lifelong rock ‘n roller who played on recordings by Buddy Holly and John Lennon and performed one of the highest blowout solos on the Rolling Stones’ Brown Sugar, has died at his home in Franklin, Tennessee. He was 70 years old.

Michael Webb, who played keyboard with Keys, said Keys died yesterday after a lengthy illness. Keys had been out on tour with the Stones earlier this year before his health prevented him from performing.

“The Rolling Stones are devastated by the loss of their very dear friend and legendary saxophone player, Bobby Keys,” the band said in a statement. “Bobby made a unique musical contribution to the band since the 1960s. He will be greatly missed.”

Known for his heavy jowls and forceful style, the Lubbock, Texas native was born on the same day as Keith Richards — December18, 1943 — and the Stones’ guitarist would often cite Keys as a soulmate and favourite musician. Besides Brown Sugar, Keys also played memorable solos on such Stones favourites as the 7-minute jam Can’t You Hear Me Knocking and the country-styled Sweet Virginia. Other career highlights included John Lennon’s chart-topping Whatever Gets You Through the Night and albums by Richards, George Harrison, Barbra Streisand and Eric Clapton.

Keys’ career dated back to the 1950s, when as a teenager he played with fellow Lubbock native Holly and The Crickets. He met the Stones in the mid-’60s while they were on the same bill in San Antonio, Texas. He first recorded with the Stones in the late 1960s, and has toured and recorded with them off and on over the following decades.

Bill Cosby resigns from Temple University’s board of trustees

Bill Cosby

Bill Cosby has resigned from Temple University’s board of trustees, the latest evidence of how sexual assault allegations are eviscerating his career and standing as one of the nation’s most beloved entertainers.

Cosby and the Philadelphia-based university confirmed the resignation Monday afternoon with brief statements.
“I have always been proud of my association with Temple University. I have always wanted to do what would be in the best interests of the university and its students. As a result, I have tendered my resignation from the Temple University Board of Trustees,” Cosby said.

A statement from the board simply acknowledged: “The Board of Trustees accepts Dr. Cosby’s resignation from the board and thanks him for his service to the university.”

A Philadelphia native, Cosby had a deep personal connection to the school, having attended classes there in the early 1960s before his comedy career took off. He had been a board member for more than 30 years and has been a major financial supporter of the school, with a scholarship program named for Cosby and his wife, Camille Cosby.

But the school had been under pressure from alumni and others to cut its ties to Cosby in the wake of the accusations by more than a dozen women of having been drugged and assaulted after encounters with him. The allegations against the comedian have flared at the same time many colleges and universities are under scrutiny for their handling of sexual assault charges on campus.

Word of Cosby’s resignation from Temple comes as the comedian has been forced to offer refunds to ticket holders for some of his upcoming live performances. He has reportedly agreed to refund hundreds of tickets sold to two shows set for Tarrytown, N.Y., on Dec. 6, according to a report Monday in the White Plains Daily Voice.

Cosby’s schedule of live performances during the past few weeks have been greatly disrupted, with some canceled outright.

Last month he saw the decades-old charges exact a huge toll as NBC dropped a sitcom it was developing for him to star, Netflix yanked a comedy special that was to have premiered Nov. 27 and cabler TV Land tabled reruns of his 1980s family comedy “The Cosby Show.”

Cosby’s lawyers have denied the allegations and decried the “vilification” of his legacy through media coverage as women have come forward.

After Dec. 6, Cosby has no live appearances scheduled until Jan. 7, when he is set to appear at the Centre in the Square theater in Kitchener, Ontario.

The outcry among ticket holders in Tarrytown was so great last week that Cosby through his management agreed to allow the refunds.

Star of the stage taking her final bow after four decades

dooreen

Doreen Brownstone, 92, is retiring from acting after four decades in the theatre.

The Prairie Theatre Exchange is saying goodbye to one of Manitoba’s most cherished actresses.

Performing is something Doreen Brownstone has been doing for more than half a century.

Brownstone, who plays “Aunt Grace” in the play Vigil, moved to Canada in 1946 from England, where she first caught the acting bug.

“My lecturer mistress would do a Shakespeare per term, so she would say, ‘Who wants to read?’ I say, ‘I do, I do.’ I loved it,” she said.

That passion led her to star in a number of television shows and movies across the country.

At 92 years old, she’s the oldest working theatre actress in Canada.

“You just revel in it,” said Brownstone. “It’s there, things are going well, there’s nothing like it.”

Four decades after her first on-screen appearance, Brownstoneis now ready to say goodbye to the stage.

“She’s gotten better with age, and we really enjoyed her performance,” said audience member Marvin Kohn. “She’s an icon in Winnipeg and Manitoba theatre, and she’ll be missed.”

“(She’s) a darling of the theatre, I would say,” said director Carman Johnston.“Everybody who knows Doreen, loves Doreen.”

As she walks away on her own terms, Brownstone says it’s emotional, but you could never tell.

“Get off the stage, Brownstone. Somebody else is coming in,” she said.

And when they do, they’ll have big shoes to fill.

Watch The latest production from Prairie Theatre Exchange, Vigil, is the story of a self-centered bank employee who receives a letter from his sick aunt. Jenna sat down with the actors, Doreen Brownstone and Michael Spencer-Davis.
