See the animated video for the modern holiday song we’ve been waiting for.

This vintage-feeling holiday video is a combined effort from Atlantic Records, Kristen Bell, Straight No Chaser, JASH, and songwriters Adam Schlesinger and David Javerbaum. The modern Christmas tune was later animated by Cuppa Coffee Studios. It’s another sign-o-the-times, don’t you think?

The Doobie Brothers to Receive Voice of Music Award at 2015 ASCAP Pop Awards

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) has announced that it will honor rock icons The Doobie Brothers with the prestigious ASCAP Voice of Music Award during its 32nd annual Pop Music Awards. The invitation-only gala will take place on April 29th, 2015 at the Loews Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles, CA. The event will also celebrate the songwriters and publishers of ASCAP’s most performed pop songs of 2014.

The ASCAP Voice of Music Award honors ASCAP members whose music gives voice to the spirit of a generation. The Doobie Brothers take their place among a stellar list of past recipients, each one an influential music great: Mary J. Blige, Garth Brooks, Kenny Chesney, Daddy Yankee, Luis Fonsi, Amy Grant, George Strait, Diane Warren and Jimmy Webb.

“Over the years the Doobie Brothers have given us one memorable song after another,” remarked ASCAP President and Chairman Paul Williams. “Their ever-changing sound has embraced classic rock, pop, country and soul, but terrific songwriting has always been at the heart of what they do. I am thrilled to honor the Doobies for more than four decades of music that continues to speak to generations of listeners.”

Formed in 1969 by Patrick Simmons and Tom Johnston, The Doobie Brothers made their mark with a run of punchy hits on Warner Bros. Records, attaining radio and chart ubiquity in the early ’70s. The group’s line-up was later augmented by Michael McDonald, whose soaring vocals pushed the band to new commercial and critical heights. Their #1 singles “Black Water” and “What a Fool Believes” lead a catalog of indelible songs that includes “Listen to the Music,” “Jesus Is Just Alright,” “Rockin’ Down the Highway,” “Long Train Runnin’,” “China Grove,” “Take Me in Your Arms,” “Takin’ It to the Streets,” “Minute by Minute,” “You Belong to Me,” “The Doctor” and more. In all, the Doobies have tallied four Grammys, five top 10 singles and 16 top 40 hits. Beginning with their multi-million-selling sophomore collection Toulouse Street, the Doobies have three multi-platinum, seven platinum and 14 gold albums. Their Best of the Doobies has sold more than 11 million copies — a rare “diamond record.” To date, the band’s propulsive, roots-based, harmony-laden, guitar-driven style has sold more than 40 million albums. On November 4th, the Doobies released their 14th album Southbound (Arista Nashville), featuring new recordings of their best-loved songs in duet with country superstars Brad Paisley, Blake Shelton, Jerrod Niemann, Sara Evans, Love & Theft and more.

Many of the biggest names in music have shared their wisdom and music at the EXPO, including Jon Bon Jovi & Richie Sambora, Jackson Browne, Lindsey Buckingham interviewed by Sara Bareilles, Dr. Luke, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Quincy Jones, Randy Newman, Katy Perry, Tom Petty, Carly Simon, Justin Timberlake in conversation with Bill Withers and Ann & Nancy Wilson (Heart).

Frank Ocean’s First Solo Song in Almost Two Years

In light of The year coming to the end, Odd Future singer Frank Ocean releases a short new track entitled “Memrise”
142864711-singer-frank-ocean-performs-onstage-at-the-2012
Ocean.

Since the release of Channel Orange, his lauded debut album, Frank Ocean has kept a relatively low profile. He’s had one or two home-run collaborations—“Superpower,” the doo-wop tune he wrote for Beyoncé’s self-titled album, is a perfect ballad and perhaps Beyoncé’s best song—but for the most part he’s shirked public appearances to work on new material. Now we have a small taste of that work: Ocean’s released “Memrise,” a lo-fi effort that’s also his first solo song in almost two years.

What we hear probably isn’t a final cut—the track has a slight, unfinished feel, with ambient production cloaking Ocean’s croon. But it’s exciting, innovative stuff, and Ocean employs a catchy stop-start delivery that’s as much syncopation as singing. Expectations should be very high for his sophomore album.

Street Artist Jay Shells Paints Hip Hop-Inspired Mural in Brooklyn

The mural is located at the intersection of Broadway and Myrtle Ave. in Brooklyn Photo: Aymann Ismail via Animal

The street artist Jay Shells has painted a mural in Brooklyn featuring lyrics by the hip hop artist Mos Def, Complex Magazine reports. The mural is a continuation of Shells’ Rap Quotes project, in which he installed street signs with rap lyrics. In a video, Shells explains that the project “plots the…corners and very specific locations mentioned in rap songs.”

“I was always hoping that the street sign project would open the door for something more permanent,” Shells told Animal. “Although I realize it wouldn’t always be possible to do a wall or a plaque on the floor for every single [rap quote], I thought it would be great to get a good handful of them to be more permanent.”

The mural, located near the intersection of Broadway and Myrtle Avenue, says: “I’m blacker than midnight on Broadway and Myrtle,” referring to the location that Mos Def mentioned in his song Mathematics. “I have found that this is an interesting way to interact with the public, to get a message out and to hear back what the public is telling me,” Shells toldComplex.

Shells first started attracting attention with his Subway Etiquette project, in which he put up screen prints and posters in New York City’s subway stations, trains, and platforms, urging New Yorkers to be respectful to each other while using the public transport network.

A Phenomenal Projection-Mapping Music Video Shot in a Single Take for Irma’s ‘Save Me’

With a never ending procession of distressing events in the news lately, you might be in need for a substantial dose of something absurdly happy. If so, this new music video for Cameroonian singer-songwriter Irma will surely fit the bill. The video was created by French design house SuperBien and directed by Xavier Maingon and Marc-Antoine Hélard who opted to shoot the entire piece on a single sound stage with the use of 7 digital projectors. The shoot must have been a Herculean effort on behalf of the kids who had to rock it out for 20-25 takes before getting the final version. The song is “Save Me” off her 2014 album Faces.
